Underworld Memories of Untouchables

"Underworld Memories of Untouchables" are the memories of three generations of people in the director's own village, Peringeel, in the Kannur district in Kerala state, India. The history, evolution, new formation and development of caste atrocities, their subsequent inventions and interventions in Kerala is politically traced. Caste has acquired the new style of suppression in a psychological level against Dalits, besides the physical atrocities by the transformations of generations and time. The Brahmanical communist interactions in the socio-political realm of Kerala failed to eradicate caste. On the other hand, the "love" and "caring" of Brahmanical communists in the Malabar region of Kerala clearly have had the psychological undertone of a caste patriarchy. Untouchability can be removed only by Dalits grabbing their own power, knowledge and money in Indian society. The geographical, social, economic and political evacuation of Dalits from mainstream villages, the death of Dalit societies, alternate Dalit political outlooks for power, intellect and economy are discussed in this video.
